Apresentação do trabalho:
We originally chose two year 11 students and one teacher to coordinate the project. We came up with the idea of making a book in which younger children could record the date when they saw different species. All students in the primary school will receive a copy of the book.
We then spoke to science teachers and other knowledgeable people around the school to consider which species to include, within the sections 'plants', 'terrestrial animals', 'insects and bugs' and 'birds'. The student coordinators, with help from others in their year group, researched species and created short texts.
To make choices about design and layout, we collected feedback from three Primary classes about options we showed them, and invited them to submit their own design ideas (feedback from one class is attached; the others were collected in group interviews). This helped us to create a final design.
The book is now complete (six example pages attached), and we will use it as part of a science / maths project to measure biodiversity.

Envolvimento dos alunos:
Two students did most of the coordinating. Another student joined later, and another six were involved with designing some of the pages - total 9 so far. We will now give the book to all primary students to collect data - approximately 90 more students.

Enquadramento curricular e extracurricular:
Curriculum fit with Primary-age students 2025-26: Students collect data on which species have been seen and when, and use these to learn about graphs; Students find different species and make new pages for the book, to learn about taxonomy and features of different species. We also have an extra-curricular fit with the activity 'gardening' as students can use these periods to look for species from the book.
Curriculum fit with Secondary students: Students will consider the pros and cons of this method of data sampling, and learn about other methods (e.g., using quadrants). They will conduct experiments to evaluate the accuracy of each.

Divulgação:
Through meetings with teachers and students (so far); will also be featured soon in the school newsletter and on noticeboards in the PYP, and used by teachers as described above.
